New research by Ampere Analysis indicates content from non-English speaking countries now accounts for 65% of acquired titles on Netflix and 50% on Disney+.

As international content continues to drive engagement and views on streaming platforms, a new report by Ampere Analysis indicates content from non-English speaking countries has reached a new high on leading platforms like Netflix and Disney.

This content now accounts for 65% of acquired titles on Netflix and 50% on Disney+, according to the report. In this regard, Japan and South Korea are the leading source countries for Netflix, while German content was the most sought-after by Disney+.

Ampere finds increasing potential in content from Japan, France, South Korea and Turkey, regions where content is now notably popular, yet the number of international exports are relatively low.

Only 40% of Japanese VOD content is available worldwide, with sci-fi and fantasy being the most popular genres. Meanwhile, South Korean content remains under-distributed despite its global appeal, with 45% of titles available only on domestic VoD services.

And while Turkish drama has consistently been a favorite among global audiences, only 30% of it is distributed internationally, as per the report, meaning fewer than 1000 titles.

French films have strong potential to reach neighbouring European audiences, supported by France’s well-established international distribution network. Around 76% of French VoD content is available in markets outside the country.

Tingting Li, Research Manager at Ampere Analysis, said: “Non-English content remains under-exploited despite growing global demand. In recent years, Prime Video, HBO Max and Disney+ have increasingly expanded non-English-language title licensing in multiple markets. Japanese, South Korean, French and Turkish content present the top opportunities for international licensing, with strong audience appeal but still gaps in cross-border availability. For content owners and platforms, buying this content can bridge the gap between audience demand and international distribution.”
